5 fall getaways you will want to go on immediately
5 fall getaways you will want to go on immediately5 fall getaways you will want to go on immediatelyYes, summer is coming to an end but that doesnt mean it is the end of your amazing travels. Fall is a great time to get away for a week or even a long weekend and you may even find better deals then you did over the summer. Plus, with more kids and families busy with going back to school, you will get the benefit of fewer crowds, lines, and standing room only (and doing all that in 100-degree heat.) Check out these great fall getaways and departeure booking nowChill out in San DiegoLike the beach? Like shopping? Like delicious food? Then take a trip to San Diego where there is always a laid-back summer vibe. Its a quick plane ride from ab gehts Angeles but it is worth it if you are coming from a farther destination. You can start your trip with a nice, relaxing walk along Waterfront Park at Embarcadero and then consider the Brothel, Bites and Booze Tour if youre a foodie or drinker. Yo u could also take a whale watching Hornblower Cruise and then wrap up the trip with a climb up the California Tower which was only reopened a few years ago after being closed for 80 years. It is 125 steps but you will get some stunning views at the top. And dont forget the famous San Diego ZooAs for where to stay there is the newly openedInterContinental San Diego which is located on the historic grounds of Lane Field the former baseball stadium of the San Diego Padres from 1936 through 1957. It is just steps away from the Embarcadero, which docks both the famed USS Midway and Maritime Museum of San Diego. Plus you will be near all of the downtown hot spots, including Little Italy, the San Diego Convention Center, Gaslamp Quarter, Seaport Village, and more.Glamping in the CatskillsThe Catskills are back, in case you hadnt heard. This was the happening spot for East Coasters, especially New Yorkers, from the 1900s to the 1970s, but then for the last 30 years, it has been in a rut. H owever, now The Catskills is experiencing an economic and cultural Renaissance (thanks in large part to young New Yorkers getting sick of city life and costs.)Theres a sense of discovery in visiting this area. Its out of the way. And its not the Hamptons, lined with stores you see on Fifth Avenue, Mike Cioffi, a Brooklyn native and owner of the Phoenicia Diner, which he bought and reopened in 2012, told CNN. And if you are ambitious enough you can just make it a day trip for a nice hike to see waterfalls or visit a funky brewery like West Kill Brewing (try the Doodlebug Pilsner or the Earn Your Keep if you want something a bit more hoppy.)If you can stay for a night there are plenty of newly renovated boutique hotels like the Eastwind Hotel Bar. Originallya bunkhouse for hunters, fly fisherman and other outdoor enthusiasts dating back to the 1920s the hotel is now an Instagrammers dream with its funky decor as well as a sauna, barrel hot tub, fire pit and the cute town of Windham to explore. If you are a bit more adventurous you can try glamping (if camping is just way too much) as Eastwind has threeLushna cabins (A-frame wooden and secluded in the woods) with queen beds in Frette linens, along with wildlife journals, and most importantly access to a private bathroom.Explore the desert and art scene in ScottsdaleThe weather is about to turn on the East Coast so you should definitely go to the desert, but you dont have to go as far as The Sahara. Just head to Scottsdale and the Sonoran Desert in Arizona. You can check out the Andaz Scottsdale Resort Spa named onConde Nast Travelers 2017 Hot List for its incredible designs inspired by artists including Frank Lloyd Wright. Then only five minutes from there you can check out theadobe structures housing a historic artists compound and galleries. This place is rich in history as it has been a sanctuary for artists and creatives since the 1930s. Current residents include painters, photographers, ceramicists and a bla cksmith. And speaking of Frank Lloyd Wright you can also tour his famous home, studio, and architectural lab, Taliesin West.See the fall foliage in St. LouisNew England may be best known for its fall foliage but that doesnt mean other parts of the country arent gorgeous during this season. Consider a getaway to St. Louis, Missouri. In addition to the leaves, you can head to the top of the Gateway Arch, check out the Missouri Botanical Garden, and take long leaf walks in Forest Park. There is also the Saint Louis Art Museum and then finish the day at Baileys Chocolate Bar for a little dessert. If youre looking for a classic St. Louis place to stay the Park Avenue Mansion is a fun BB right near Lafayette Park.Take an adventure in Los Cabos, MexicoWho says you need to see foliage to have fun? Its one way. Another fun way is to go to the beautiful, pristine resort town of Los Cabos, Mexico. Umm do you like Sea Turtles? Because they have them. Each year from August to early December, sea turtles come home to lay their eggs in the Sea of Cortes. How magical is that? In addition to the wild life, this area is bustling with action. This fall Los Cabos debuts the Inaugural San Jose del Cabo Restaurant Week, hosted in October and then in November there is the 7th Annual Los Cabos International Film Festival. You could see a sea turtle and Nicole Kidman (a recent attendee)The historical town of San Jose del Cabos annual Art Walk kicks off again in early November as well, opening up the Gallery Districts numerous Mexican and internal artists galleries and workshops to the public every Thursday evening. Plus two luxury resorts just opened for you to bookincluding Solaz, a Luxury Collection Resort (opens in September) and Garza Blanca Resort Spa Los Cabos (opens in November).Eat your way through CharlestonWhy wouldnt you take a trip to Travel + LeisuresNo. 1 City in the World? In addition to its incredible history, the restaurant scene is off the charts. Before the food sta rt with a historic walking tour or a carriage ride of the city to experience its rich past. But now it is time for the food. Hit up167 Raw,Poes Tavern and then grab a bucket of beer atReds Ice House. Great brunch places include Macintosh or Cannon Green. With so many AirBNB and hotel options, you honestly cant go wrong in Charleston.Hike The Tetons in WyomingFor those who like an active expedition there is no better place than Jackson Hole, Wyoming. Fall is the perfect time to experience Jackson Hole at Spring Creek Ranch, the mountain resort just minutes from Grand Teton National Park and Yellowstone National Park. Fall is the ideal time to experience thebugle of the bull elk. At the peak of bull elk breeding season in September and October, the characteristic call or bugle can be heard from just before dusk to dawn. Now thats a story you will tell when you get back to the office You can book aLate Season Adventure Package, which gives you a5-night Late Season Adventure Package at S pring Creek Ranch. It is available September 23rd through October 13thand you will get to stay on a wildlife sanctuary almost 1,000 feet above the town of Jackson, with great views of the Teton Mountain Range. Spooky, Scary, Horrifying Resumes for Halloween
Spooky, Scary, Horrifying Resumes for Halloween Spooky, Scary, Horrifying Resumes for Halloween Resumes can be scary to create, but just as horrifying to read. Recruiters and hiring managers are subjected to comic sans, puke green font, typos, inappropriate headshots, and other terrorsBefore you submit your resume, really contemplate how youre presenting yourself. Go a step further and get a second opinion from a friend or upload it to Jobscan to check for best practices, red flags, and opportunities to improve. Here are three of the spookiest resumes we found for Halloween1. A ghostly resume designvia TwelveSkipThis job seekers resume design is appropriate considering hes looking to get his foot in the door in a role that utilizes his animation, design, and illustration skills. In fact, its expected. For the rest of us, getting too creative with our resume can do more harm than good.If artistic ability isnt part of the job description, the hiring manager might wonder how serious you are about the job. And for all you know, they might just leid share the same sensibilities. Even worse, applicant tracking systems(ATS) would immediately bury a resume like this. When you apply through an ATS, recruiters can run searches for specific skills. For example, a recruiter might search for Photoshop. Nigel has the right resume keywords, but he might not come up as a match for a number of reasons. The ATS could have trouble processing this obscure resume font. ATS are also known to struggle with tables and columns, which are used throughout the resume. The information in these fields might not be properly parsed and considered for the search.Jobscan checks for resume keywords as well as other ATS traps like fonts, columns and more.2. Would you invite this monster to an interview?via Business InsiderWhen do you take a chance with an over-the-top resume design? Drawing this kind of attention can workEvery time I sent that resume out I got an interview without fail, Joe Kelso t old Business Insider. If I really wanted an interview somewhere, thats the one I would use.If youre physically handing out your resumes or emailing them directly to someone as part of your application, your resume is less likely to get hung up in an ATS. You can take more design liberties in these instances, especially if youre in a creative field. But 98% of Fortune 500 companies use ATSand even if you are able to network and deliver your resume directly to someone, you might still need to formally apply through the ATS. Make sure you have an ATS-friendly resume ready to go as a companion to your creative resume.3. The horror of the wrong attachmentvia BuzzfeedThis applicant meant to attach a zip file titled with a bunch of numbers, but instead attached a similarly titled image of actor Nicolas Cage doing his thing. This is a great example of why your resume file name matters Not only will it keep embarrassing mistakes (or hilarious viral content) from happening, its an opportunity to appear professional and organized. The file name will be visible, so take the extra second to rename your file to something like NicolasCageResume.docx or NicolasCageActor.docx.

October 2008 - Does My Resume Stink
October 2008 - Does My Resume StinkOctober 2008 - Does My Resume StinkOctober 2008 Does My Resume Stink?Would you like resume advice from the experts? TheLadders.com Resume Service is here to help. Contact ur experts directly or, if youre feeling lucky, send us your resume for entry in our Does My Resume Stink contest. Each month, one winner will receive a full resume rewrite for freeAnd now, on to this months before and afterJack Ryan, Tom Clancys famous fiction hero, has little on this months recipient of our resume overhaul. As a retired Air Force intelligence officer, our client was seeking to take his wealth of experience and knowledge about intelligence and security to the private sector in a senior management/analysis role. Unfortunately, his old resume was simply leid doing its job of marketing his unusual and valuable background in an effective manner. Here are a few topics we covered during the rewrite processFunctional to ChronologicalFirst of all, the format the client h ad selected for the old resume was a true handicap. He had decided to use a functional format where he pulled out skills into categories such as Leadership and Supervision, Analysis, Communication, and Planning and Implementation. He followed that with a Professional History which was basically a chronology of positions within the Air Force. It was likely he selected this format because he felt overwhelmed with the amount of experience he had attained throughout his career in the military. In trying to find some form of organization, the functional format may have seemed logical. Regrettably, it was a poor choice that did not benefit his career and dampened his efforts. For his new resume, we changed the format and organization to a straight chronological format.Achievements vs. Skill SetsThe functional format makes career progression difficult to determine and does not provide a strong frame of reference for the accomplishments. This client had a very strong career progression in t he military and a chronological format choice effectively highlights that strength. The functional categories tended to place emphasis on less important skill sets such as communication and planning and implementation. The chronological places the emphasis on career span and high points of achievement.StorytellingWe also reorganized the content to a paragraph/bullet format. The story of his career is able to come through in a much clearer message by using this format rather than simply having a long list of indistinguishable bullets. This structure allowed us to present the fascinating scope of his roles to set the stage for the reader on each position and then bring in his accomplishments and achievements via bullets.Industry JargonThe client was targeting a position in national intelligence/homeland security, a field that is distinctly tied to the defense industry. Because of this, we did not scrub the language completely to de-militarize it however, we did remove some jargon to m ake it more readable and have a more professional tone. Along unterstellung lines, we also included his service medals and awards which will have weight with the defense/security industry reader. If he had been targeting a career outside of the defense realm, these awards may have had little meaning to a strictly civilian reader and we would have excluded them. The Wow FactorTo effectively draw the reader into the resume, we created a strong branding line at the top, followed by a profile that had more impact and glamour while accurately portraying his experience. Versed in research and analysis for the highest levels of audience, including the President and Cabinet members speaks louder than Superb communications skills, capable of writing for an executive or specialist audience Effective career marketing is quite dependent upon word choice, and this is an excellent example. We have written the language throughout the document with much more power to provide better imagery to the re ader.Education ExclusionWe were surprised to find an additional Master-level degree hiding in his background that had not appeared on his old resume. We included that degree and removed the dates of the training and awards. We always want the focus to be on the achievement or the degree rather than on the date it was accomplished. We also removed the Availability Immediate line from the very beginning because it is not used in a verkommen resume. The end result of our resume overhaul was a succinct, hard-hitting portrait of a career that has been well-spent in the service of our country and one that will be of strong value to a company engaged in intelligence, national security, and homeland defense. Just as Clancys novels grab the attention of his targeted audience, this resume grabs attention and keeps it

Its No Fun Working for a Female Boss
Its No Fun Working for a Female Boss Its No Fun Working for a Female Boss From the mans perspective-Its no fun working for a female boss because my boss is-Overly critical-Micromanages-Feels like she always has to have a presence in the officeFrom the womans perspectiveIts no fun working for a female boss because my boss is-Mean-Talks down to me-Workaholic, hasnt taken a vacation in 7 yearsBoth the man and woman agreed that their female leaders are less interpersonal and not as socialable as their male counterparts. And just to give you a little background on both employees, the man works in Finance at a Fortune 500 company while the woman works for a loans refinance company. Both are college graduates the man has an MBA while the woman has a J.D.As I listened to both workers explain their dislike for working for females, (in my Carrie Bradshaw voice) I couldnt help but wonder, Why is it so difficult to work for a woman?Im aware that most Americans prefer a male boss, but Id never e ncountered workers with such reasoning as this. Talking with the two, the conclusion seemed to be simple overcompensation. Much like the pit-bull in a skirt theory, it seemed that these workers bosses were aggressive, mean, and non-personable because they were trying to overcompensate for being women in management. And as I continued listening to their stories, I thought, Well, whats a gal to do?Seriously, what are women in management positions supposed to do? On one end they have the women stereotypes- emotional, weak, motherly, soft- pulling at their workplace identities while on the other end they have the pit bull in a skirt, cut throat, think-like-a-man personas doing the same.Women are already unfairly deemed as inferior to their male counterparts, especially when it comes to holding leadership positions. So they try to be aggressive with a no-nonsense type of management style to show the bigwigs that they are just as able to effectively lead a group of people just like any man . Yet, if they do this (as in the case of these two workers), theyre viewed as no fun and less socialable than a male boss. The workers said male bosses will talk and laugh with you while female bosses dont allow that camaraderie to develop between a boss and an employee. Yet, even the male worker noted that having the pit bull in a skirt approach will probably help a woman move up the management ranks much faster. And doesnt ur nation desperately need more of this acceleration to take place? I mean, look at the statisticsWomen only hold 14.6 percent of Executive Officer positions in Fortune 500 companies, a mere .3 percentage increase from 2012.At 16.9 percent, women dont even account for one-fourth of the board seat holders for Fortune 500 companies.Women dont even hold 5 percent of Fortune 500 or 1000 CEO positions. They account for 4.2 percent and 4.5 percent, respectively, of all CEO positions. In 2010, women earned $155 less weekly than men, and while male CEOs earn 78 cents on e very dollar, female CEOs earn 33 cents.Women are at a disadvantage when it comes to representation in senior-level positions, equal pay, and now in management styles?Again I ask, what are women in management supposed to do? Be too compassionate and be considered a typical woman and perceived as an inferior leader. Be too aggressive and get deemed no fun and lose the boss-employee relationship.Every day, women are continuously put in tough situations where theyre forced to choose between two extremes even though both roads seem to lead to destruction. Corporate America will continue to make it that much harder for women to advance in their careers if were constantly scrutinized for not being a certain way but leise face inevitable doom for being a another way. Both the male and female workers did offer one positive note for working for a woman She understands when it comes to social issues. If they need to leave early to pick up children, their bosses are sympathetic, unlike male mana gers. While this is great and dandy, it does nothing to keep women managers from constantly landing at square one. Like the two workers examples, if the negatives of working for a woman constantly outweigh the positives, and even if women change their approaches to be more womanly theyre still at a disadvantage, then unfortunately, our working gals have progressed no further than their positions at the beginning of this article. Now thats a very harsh (but realistic) statement, wouldnt you agree?

Navy Lifestyle Facts to Consider Before Joining
Navy Lifestyle Facts to Consider Before JoiningNavy Lifestyle Facts to Consider Before JoiningMost new recruits are not necessarily thinking about their living quarters or medical benefits when deciding which branch of the military to join. To be sure, the best way to decide which branch of the service is best for you is to have a good sense of where your skills and career interests are, and choose cousined on the opportunities available. The Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) test will help determine each new recruits best job match. But if youre still torn between two or more different branches of the military, you may want to look at quality of life issues like living quarters, pay and medical benefits. Bear in mind that many of these factors are subject to budgetary constraints and depend on the tempo of any ongoing wars or missions. Here Are a Few Things to Consider Housing and Barracks In the U.S. Navy, the most frequent complaint from new recruits seems to be about the condition of barracks on its bases. The Navy has worked to address this is recent years, but its worth remembering that it wasnt that long ago that all juniorchef enlisted unmarried sailors who were assigned to live on the ship even when that ship was in home port for months at a time. That meant that a junior enlisted unmarried sailor would have a rack (bed), a few dozen square feet to himself, and not much else. And in most cases, sailors had to share their quarters (not their rack, mind you) with a roommate. To rectify this, the Navy built junior enlisted barracks on many of its bases, reducing the number of junior sailors who live aboard ships. Lifestyle On or Off-Base When not at sea, the Navy has a fairly good quality of life program that includes family housing, on-base shopping and services, and recreation. Their exchange system (shopping) is considered by many military members to be the best among the services. Like the other services, the Navy converted much o f its existing on-base family housing to whats known as military privatized housing. Under this concept, civilian companies are encouraged to construct, maintain, and manage military-only housing complexes on and close to military bases. At most bases, married sailors are given a choice of living in family housing, or living off base at a place of their choosing, with a monthly housing allowance. Sailors who are authorized to live off base at government expenseand those who live in family housing receive a monthly food allowance. Those who live in the barracks/dormitories do not normally receive this allowance, but eat their meals for free in the on-base dining facilities. Health Care and Pay Like all branches of the U.S. military, sailors in the Navy are eligible for comprehensive health care coverage and life insurance. The pay scale for enlisted personnel the Navy, as in all branches of the military, depends on a sailors rank, or as its called in the Navy the sailors rate, as wel l as his years of service. Sailors can be promoted based on performance, and enlisted sailors have to earn an increase in rate. Most sailors can expect to move from E-1, which is the lowest rate, to E-2 after nine months, and from E-2 to E-3 after the next nine months. Promotion from E-3 to E-4 is likely after the next six months.
